Autumn arrives in the Arzuaga vineyards

The wind always announces the arrival of autumn in Ribera del Duero. This exceptional area of Castile and León still holds warm October afternoons and deliciously cool mornings. But it’s that breeze that picks up at dusk that tells us the cold is arriving. And the vines notice. Autumn in this area is an almost magical time when you can discover new scenery and the beauty of ochre, garnet and brown tones. A world to explore at Bodegas Arzuaga.

October invites us to relax surrounded by the changing vineyard, which, little by little, will lose its leaves, but still brings us a one-of-a-kind sight. The warm afternoons are still perfect for strolling around the La Planta estate to get an up-close look at the deer and wild boar in one of their prime moments. It’s an experience you’ll be hard-pressed to forget.

In the midst of so much beauty, the vines are undergoing a vital process. Since the flowering began, we’ve witnessed the growth and development of the vineyard, with the small buds first, then the intense emerald colour of the leaves in spring and the ripening of the grapes in summer. It’s a process that continues in autumn. Vines are deciduous plants, so their leaves will change colour and then fall off. However, until they lose their leaves, they offer us one of the most amazing shows of this time of year.

Everything happens far from our eyes, though. The chlorophyll, responsible for that vibrant green shade in spring and summer, is going to disappear thanks to the environmental conditions. The plant stops producing it, so the ochre and brown shades are going to emerge as the great stars of the season. They’ll be responsible for the beauty of the landscape until the arrival of winter makes the leaves disappear and leaves the vines totally bare.

But that’s another story. Now, in October, we’d like to invite you to discover one of the nicest times for wine tourism. The wine is already resting in our winery, the vineyards on our estate are decked in shades of ochre and maybe red, and the weather is still good in this area of Ribera del Duero. It’s the perfect time to come and explore Bodegas Arzuaga, stay with us, learn more about our wines and get carried away by the subtle appeal of autumn in the vineyard.
