In August, we experience some very special weeks in the vineyard at Arzuaga. And we’re not
just talking about the spectacle of walking through the vines and enjoying the green of the
leaves and the white and red shades of the clusters that are now hanging from their branches.
There’s no doubt that these are magical sensations, but today, we wanted to talk about that
feeling of vertigo, nerves and, above all, excitement that we get as we get closer to one of the
most special times of the year: the harvest.
During the harvest, we collect the fruit of all the work we’ve done over the vines’ entire life
cycle. That’s why in the days leading up to the big event, it’s really important that we pay close
attention to see when the grapes are reaching the exact point of ripeness depending on the
wine that they’ll be used for. For a few weeks before the start of the harvest, our vineyard
team starts to check the grapes’ status so that, once the exact moment arrives, the harvesting
can begin and a new vintage will start to take shape.
After we’ve been careful to regulate the production potential, leaving just the right clusters on
each vine so it doesn’t get overloaded and to increase the quality, we just have to wait. We
have to wait patiently and without intervening for the grapes to finish their ripening process,
and then we can start to pick them. The right time to start the harvest also depends on the
weather conditions we’ve had in Ribera del Duero, the region where we’re located. Factors
such as rainfall or lower temperatures can make the harvest come a few days late, while
higher temperatures can bring it forward.
However, for the time being, we can say that the prospects for this 2022 harvest are very
positive, in terms of both quantity and quality. The plants are also in an excellent state of
health, without any kind of disease that may affect the harvest.
The key moment is drawing near once again… The vines’ growing cycle is about to finish! Then
in just a few weeks, the cycle will start all over again and we’ll be able to witness the plants’
evolution and how they follow their course.
