At Bodegas Arzuaga, we’d like you to get to know the wines that make up our entire range one by one, so today we wanted to introduce you to one of the most popular. This is a difficult period, as we all know, especially when it comes to going out and meeting up with friends for a nice meal with the best wines. That’s why at Bodegas Arzuaga, we’re bringing you our wines via your screen, with video tastings and posts on our blog. Today, we’re going to talk to you about one of our most popular red wines: La Planta.
This wine is made with grapes harvested on the estate that gives it its name: La Planta, located at 900 metres above sea level, which is where our entire wine-making project began with Florentino Arzuaga in 1987. The name, as Ignacio Arzuaga tells us, has its origin in the ancient holm oak tree that stands impressively on the estate. It’s an iconic tree that’s among the hundred oldest in Spain. ‘In honour of this estate and this tree, we’ve made this wine that’s fun, cheerful and free and easy’, perfect ‘for everyday drinking and for chatting over in a bar,’ explains Ignacio Arzuaga.
La Planta is a single variety wine made from Tempranillo grapes only, the most representative variety of the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin. Before being released for sale, La Planta spends six months ageing in French and American oak. Ultimately, the aim of La Planta is, as Ignacio Arzuaga notes, ‘to make a red that’s easy to drink, but with all the character of our Tempranillo grapes’. So, when tasting this wine, what we mainly find is red fruit, a bit of strawberry, plum, fresh aromas, little touches of smoke from the rich wood the wine is stored in… There’s also a predominance of other fruits such as cherries, morello cherries, redcurrants… In short, fresh red fruit with acid touches.
One of the best aspects of this wine is its versatility when it comes to pairing. It can easily go with different cured meats, Spanish omelette, mild meats, white fish, grilled fish, pasta… And it also gives the best of itself at different temperatures, because whether it’s at room temperature or cooler, it doesn’t lose its properties and offers a treat for the taste buds.
This and other tastings of our wines are available on our YouTube channel and on any of our social media, so you can keep enjoying the Arzuaga experience even more.
