Experience the magic of springtime at Arzuaga

This post is also available in: Español (Spanish)

The first rays of morning sunshine hit the vines at Arzuaga. The days start to get longer, the countryside changes colour and the vines show the first shoots. Spring has come to Arzuaga. The vines have already gone through the ‘bleeding’ stage, the time when the sap rises through the canes, and the buds are giving way to the first shoots. It’s a very special time for us, when life returns to the vines after their winter rest.

It’s also a great time to visit us. The shoots keep growing in May and the vineyard starts to turn a vibrant green colour that contrasts with the shades of the earth, offering a real sight to behold. In the winery, the activity begins in earnest at this time of year, too. The green pruning will start soon to clear the plant to only leave the shoots that are necessary, encouraging proper vine growth this way. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the huge expanse of vineyards at Arzuaga and to get to know the vines and their life cycle a bit better. Maybe you’ll even be able to see their flowers up close for the first time.

Springtime, with the ‘bleeding’, bud break and flowering, is usually a period that’s not as well known as autumn among those who are newcomers to the world of wine. The earthy colours of the vineyard in autumn and the explosion of the vintage usually take centre stage, but springtime is as special as it is important in the never-ending wine cycle.

The small bunches of flowers start to peek out from the vines. It’s a delicate moment since a stable temperature is needed, as well as lots of sunlight and little or no rain, to make sure the harvest is as expected. Up close, the position of the flowers recalls the future grape clusters that will set on the vine if all goes well. At Arzuaga, it’s all hands on deck for the whole winery team during this especially important period, who look after the vineyard so the start to the summer also means the start of the fruit set.

The flowering is the sign that life goes on, and it’s a great time to come to our winery and discover this lesser-known period, or to toast with one of our wines and their new vintages, too. You can find all our wines to celebrate springtime at our winery and https://tienda.arzuaganavarro.com/.
