At Bodegas Arzuaga, we live among the vineyards. The vines surround our wine tourism complex, located in Quintanilla de Onésimo, in the heart of Ribera del Duero. And it’s not just the winery that’s among the Tempranillo vineyards; our philosophy of love and care for the plant can be seen in Arzuaga Hotel & SPA as well. The Arzuaga vineyards are visible from all the rooms, as well as from inside the spa.
That’s why for us, witnessing the vine’s life cycle up close is nothing new. Although, to be honest, despite enjoying it for years, we never cease to be amazed by the magic it offers us each year. However, this year in particular, when the entire world has stopped, it makes us even more excited and filled with emotion when we see how life goes on in our vineyards.
Spring comes and with it we leave behind the winter temperatures that accompanied us here in the province of Valladolid. We’re starting to have more pleasant temperatures that make the plant ‘wake up’, the sap leave the roots and run through the vine again and, this way, life come back to the vineyards.
The truth is that, once again, we’re lucky to be able to enjoy the wonderful look this rebirth gives us. The green leaves begin to appear on the previously bare shoots and, what’s even more exciting, we start to see the small clusters that will grow and ripen, turning into the grapes we use to make our wines.
Each phenological stage of the vine has its beauty, as you can discover when you come to enjoy our wine tourism tours, but it’s true that this budbreak is particularly beautiful. You only have to look at the photo that accompanies this post – pretty, isn’t it?
Now it’s our turn and it’s time to do the green pruning once the budbreak is finished. During this process, we’ll manually clear the part of the vegetation that doesn’t need to be there and that could harm the grape quality and ripening. This way, we’ll leave two buds whose shoots will provide the clusters we’re looking for.
We hope to be able to start the wine tourism visits at our winery very soon so you can also enjoy the magic of our vineyards first-hand. Don’t forget to follow us on social media so you don’t miss the re-opening date!
