Pago Florentino – A gem of Arzuaga

All the wines we produce in Arzuaga make us proud. A pride that is born in the vineyard itself, which we take care of day by day to give us the best outcome. And that, after preparing the different references, they are confirmed when we get such a good reaction from you. Today we want to talk to you in more detail about one of these wines, flagged by care and quality: our Pago Florentino.  Less well-known that it is one of the few Pago wines in Spain according to the regulations.

When we refer to Pago wines, we talk about one of the most exclusive wines, recognised for their quality. Currently, in Spain there are only 17 Pago wines, a rating that is awarded based on the quality of the soil in which the vines are grown and that produce the grapes that these wines are made exclusively with. The areas recognised as “pagos” are in the communities of Navarra, Valencia, Aragón and Castilla-La Mancha. In this last region, specifically in the city of Malagón, the pago is the place in which are the vineyards that give the Cencibel grapes that we make our Pago Florentino with.

Undoubtedly, the Florentino Pago – whose name pays tribute to the founder of Bodegas Arzuaga, Florentino Arzuaga – brings very rich nuances to our wine sample, since it is a Cencibel Tempranillo variety from our estate, winery and vineyard of Castilla-La Mancha.

And it is another wine in a big list, this is a different Tempranillo, which is expressed in the glass with warmer nuances, notes and accents, more mature. Without a doubt we are before a wine with a genuine Pago. With each harvest, we find a vintage better than the previous one.

As for the terroir itself, the vineyards are in an enviable place, at the foot of a hill, protected in the North by a mountain range and facing the South, towards two natural lagoons. The weather presents great variations of temperature, with very cold winters with temperatures below zero and hot summers that even exceed 40˚C that make the rain minimal.

At harvest time the grapes are picked manually. We select the best grapes that come from the estate to make this wine without chemical stabilisation. Maceration is carried out in cold and, later, a part of the wine makes the malolactic fermentation in a new barrel and its ageing is about 12 months in French and American oak.

A clean and bright red that has a multitude of aromas ranging from ripe red fruit to roasted coffee, black fruits and roasted hints. In the mouth you will discover a wine with great intensity, lasting over time.
