“Relating a wine with a painting is not new, but doing so with six wines from different wineries, all large wineries, and with the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum… This is a new proposal in Spain and a wonderful idea”. These words, spoken by Ignacio Arzuaga, undoubtedly represent the feeling of Bodegas Arzuaga before an initiative as fantastic and beautiful as #elvinoesarte (wine is art), which this October was presented at the Madrid museum with the presence of representatives of the six participating wineries.
This project, organised by the specialised store Vinoselección, combines two seemingly different worlds, but they have much in common such as wine and art. Sensations, quality, pleasure, taste… all of them are common factors that we find both when we enjoy a glass of quality wine and when we visit a museum and let ourselves go by the brush strokes that making up the paintings exhibited there. But, what if we transfer those paintings to the labels of our wines? Van Gogh, Popova, Juan Gris, Rubens, Cézanne and Renoir are the players on this project, the artists whose works – originally exhibited at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum – are represented in the bottles of six large wineries, including Arzuaga.
And the truth is that we even have no doubt when we were proposing to participate in #elvinoesarte. Therefore, from now on, a batch of our Arzuaga Reserva 2014 has a very special label, which represents the painting “El fumador” of Juan Gris. Amaya Arzuaga was in charge of choosing this work, as stated in the Vinoselección blog: “I love cubism and geometry, how the artist breaks down the work. I think this painting fits very well with the philosophy of a Reserva wine: both of them must be devoted time. The details of this picture are not visible at first sight”. For his part, Ignacio Arzuaga indicates that “people who love art are lively people, when they see something they do not remain passive, but try to examine it. And wine is like one of these paintings that doesn’t automatically tell you what it is. Wine is not just pouring it in the glass and drinking it, it’s analyse and thinking about what is making you enjoy”.
