April – A Month of Numerous Changes in the Vineyard

This post is also available in: Español (Spanish)

At Bodegas Arzuaga, April marks the awakening of the vineyard after its winter slumber dormant, signalling the start of a new growing cycle. Spring is truly here, well pronounced with longer daylight hours and milder temperatures gently allowing the vines back to life aimed to starting the new season. Yet, it remains a delicate time – the risk of late frosts still looms. That’s why we keep a close eye on our vines, as these cold snaps can damage the first buds, potentially delaying or harming the vine’s development.

And so, April is a crucial month in Arzuaga. It’s the time of budbreak when dormant buds begin to swell and reveal their tiny green shoots. This stage is the official baseline of the vine’s vegetative growth. The soils in our vineyards – a unique mix of clay, limestone, and sand – begin to warm up, encouraging nutrient absorption and root development.

It’s also the season for green pruning, a technique used to remove unnecessary shoots so the plant can focus its energy on producing fewer, but higher-quality, grape clusters. Alongside this, we intensify soil care with tasks like tilling and weed control to ensure optimal aeration and prevent competition for water resources.

April showers are key at this spring stage. They provide just the right amount of moisture for a healthy growth, but not excessive. Though, the vineyard must be well drained to avoid waterlogging, which could compromise vine health.
In short, April is a month of transition and careful observation here in the Ribera del Duero. At Bodegas Arzuaga, we bring all our experience and knowledge to the fore, monitoring every detail to ensure the vines grow in the best possible conditions. It’s in this crucial period that we lay the foundations for a high-quality harvest in the months to come.

And also, one of our favourite times at the winery. The vines begin to stretch, the life cycle of the vineyard is ready to start anew, and soon the landscape will be awash with green. It’s a truly beautiful sight, one that’s best experienced in person. Come and witness it for yourself at Bodegas Arzuaga!
