Albillo de Arzuaga, a “prodigious” wine according to Peñín

Tradition is not at odds with evolution. In Bodegas Arzuaga we know that and we work so that these two concepts are closely bound. The last proof of this is the wine that we introduce you today, one of our latest elaborations that – despite its recent creation – has already garnered great successes: our new white wine Albillo.

The first vintage for the year 2007 has a limited production of 500 bottles. Undoubtedly, Arzuaga Albillo is one of our most special and unique wines in which we show the enormous potential of both this native variety and the ageing of the great white wines. This single-variety, bottled in 2015, has a very long ageing time and 93 months in barrel.

The care given to the elaboration of this wine and the quality that we have achieved in the final result has already been recognised by critics and literature of the highest prestige such as the Peñín Guide, one of the most important publications in the sector that in its 2020 edition has awarded this white wine with 98 points. And it is that our 2007 Albillo has become – as they emphasise – “the first white wine of the Ribera del Duero, at least in the origin of the grapes, in reaching this score”. “A white wine of oxidative ageing completely atypical, but full of complexity, created at the stage of Jorge Monzón, who has laid a new concept of wine on the table in which the albillo itself is able to show a high level”, they point out from the guide: one of the reference manuals at national and international level.

So much so, that José Peñín himself, founder of the Guide, shared a picture on his social media enjoying our new white wine and highlighting that “Recently, Arzuaga has turned its wines around, they have moved to some wines with a deep character of the terroir with a growing score. We find the zenith of this career in this prodigious white of the Castilian albillo, the so-called “older”, with an age of more than 10 years; complex, mysterious, with a permanent freshness but also with the elegance gained through the years”. Words that, as much as for their content as for the important prescriber who pronounced them, please us and imply a recognition for the work of many years.
