The harvest is one of the most crucial times of the year at Bodegas Arzuaga. After months of painstaking care—keeping a close eye on the vines and nurturing them through every single stage—the moment has finally arrived to pick the fruit that will define our latest vintage.
In our winery, the harvest marks the start of a fast-paced few weeks where both vineyard and cellar run at full throttle. But harvesting is about so much more than simply picking grapes. Pinpointing the exact moment to harvest is one of the most critical decisions in the entire winemaking process.
As harvest approaches, we keep a very close eye on how our vines are progressing. Weather plays a pivotal role throughout the entire vine cycle—and even more so during these final weeks of ripening.
The microclimate here in our stretch of the Ribera del Duero paves the way for slow, steady ripening. The sharp contrast between daytime and nighttime temperatures means that while sun-drenched hours drive maturation, cool nights lock in their signature acidity and freshness.
That is why, come harvest time, we are not just looking for ripe grapes—we are looking for fruit picked at the ideal moment to bring out the full potential of every single plot.
Throughout the year, we tend to our vineyards and manage yields through dedicated viticultural practices. From winter pruning and green harvesting to cluster thinning, this constant care ensures we reach the harvest with the exact balance of quantity and quality we strive for.
Weather conditions naturally shape every single vintage. Rain, temperature, sunshine hours, and diurnal temperature variation mean that no two harvests are ever the same.
At Bodegas Arzuaga, we approach each vintage by keeping our sharpest focus on what happens out in the vineyard—because the quality of a great wine starts long before the grapes ever cross the winery doors.
Among the varieties we cultivate across our vineyards, Tempranillo takes centre stage. It is a variety deeply rooted in Ribera del Duero and a major driver behind the character of our wines–with each plot bringing its own distinctive identity to the table.
In essence, the harvest is a truly thrilling time for us. After a full year of hard work, we get to see the very grapes we have nurtured with such care slowly begin their journey into wine.
And while there is still a long road ahead before a new vintage reaches the bottle, the harvest allows us to catch our first glimpse of what lies ahead.
