Today, we’re opening the doors to our winery to invite you to taste the 2017 vintage of our Arzuaga Reserva alongside Javier Bañales, Arzuaga’s sales manager and brand ambassador. This is a journey through a wine that’s as elegant as it is special. ‘It’s certainly one of Arzuaga’s most exclusive and iconic wines, one of the ones we know as a cuvée; wines that we don’t make every year. This Reserva is a synonym for the elegance of Arzuaga. We should know that the grapes come from vineyards over 60 years old, from different places and different soil types, to get a sensual, elegant result’. Bañales’ words definitely define what this Arzuaga Reserva 2017 means to us.
‘It’s a wine that we could consider an iron fist in a silk glove. 2017 was a year with small grapes and high temperatures, which translates into richer and deeper wines’. And each of those characteristics is in Arzuaga Reserva 2017. It’s a wine made mostly from Tempranillo grapes (95%), from different places and soil types. The rest is made up with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the La Planta estate. It’s a wine aged in new French oak barrels for 26 months, where the malolactic fermentation takes place. ‘This is pure Ribera del Duero style,’ explains Bañales.
‘On the nose, we notice the 26 months in French oak, as well as lots of fruit; you can smell the typical fruity concentration of the Tempranillo. It’s a complex wine, with notes of tobacco, where you can notice the sensations of the land, of our geography, with the moorland and small hillocks. It’s very balanced, very elegant and in the finish you can notice the oak and that large proportion of fruit,’ points out Bañales. Elegance is present in all aspects of this wine.
‘Right now, the wine is ready for drinking; it’s perfect for enjoying today, but we have to take into account that the passage of the years in the bottle will make it stronger in all senses. It has an elegant mouthfeel and a great persistence that recalls the aromatic complexity on the nose. It’s very flavourful and, again, we can notice the fruit,’ he remarks.
This ends the tasting of a wine that’s special to our winery that we hope you’ll enjoy as well. You can find it now at https://tienda.arzuaganavarro.com/
