How did the Arzuaga project come about?
Currently, we are sure that all of you relate Arzuaga with our current infrastructure, as well as, of course, with the quality wines that we make vintage after vintage and that garner national and international recognitions. But like all stories, the Arzuaga’s one also has a beginning, a start that we want to tell you in this post on our blog.
The story we tell you today has its starting point near the 1990s. It was at this time when the Arzuaga family entered into the Ribera del Duero, initially just to acquire La Planta estate in the moor found within the municipal district of Quintanilla de Onésimo. Soon, Florentino Arzuaga joined the then emerging wine sector and started the vineyard plantations in 1987. Plantations that, some years later, would be complemented by the construction of our winery by the roadside of the 122 national highway.
In its beginnings, this project - which years later would evolve to the winery you know today - surprised in the municipality of Quintanilla de Onésimo for its speed, as in just one year the winery was built with that central bulrush of the facade that continues to characterise its architecture. It was, as we pointed out, at the beginning of the 1990s and we are proud to say that Arzuaga red wines have already become part of the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin since the first winemaking.
It can be assured that the entry of Arzuaga into the D.O. was born as a solid project, as time has shown, since it all started with the planting of vines following the construction of the winery. From now on will come a whole uninterruptedly project that has been providing our facilities - located on the N-122, inescapable area of the Douro Valley - with different initiatives that have culminated by turning Arzuaga into the most complete tourism and hotel complex of the Ribera del Duero.
Besides this piece of content, we propose to learn more about the history and philosophy of Arzuaga through an interview with Ignacio Arzuaga, Managing Director of Bodegas Arzuaga and the son of the founder of this group, Florentino.
